Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is the second novel in the Harry Potter series, written by J. K. Rowling. The plot follows Harry's second year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, during which a series of messages on the walls of the school's corridors warn that the "Chamber of Secrets" has been opened and that the "heir of Slytherin" would kill all pupils who do not come from all-magical families. These threats are followed by attacks which leave residents of the school "petrified" (frozen like stone). Throughout the year, Harry and his friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger investigate the attacks. The book was published in the United Kingdom on 2 July 1998 by Bloomsbury and in the United States on 2 June 1999 by Scholastic Inc. Although Rowling found it difficult to finish the book, it won high praise and awards from critics, young readers and the book industry, although some critics thought the story was perhaps too frightening for younger children. Much like with other novels in the series, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets triggered religious debates; some religious authorities have condemned its use of magical themes, while others have praised its emphasis on self-sacrifice and on the way in which a person's character is the result of the person's choices. Several commentators have noted that personal identity is a strong theme in the book, and that it addresses issues of racism through the treatment of non-magical, non-human and non-living characters. Some commentators regard the diary as a warning against uncritical acceptance of information from sources whose motives and reliability cannot be checked. Institutional authority is portrayed as self-serving and incompetent. The book is also known to have some connections to the sixth novel of the series, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. The film adaptation of the novel, released in 2002, became (at that time) the seventh highest grossing film ever and received generally favourable reviews. Video games loosely based on Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets were also released for several platforms, and most obtained favourable reviews.

Tale[edit] Little Red Riding Hood, illustrated in a 1927 story anthology The story revolves around a girl called Little Red Riding Hood. In the Grimms' and Perrault's versions of the tale, she is named after the red hooded cape/cloak that she wears. The girl walks through the woods to deliver food to her sickly grandmother (wine and cake depending on the translation). In the Grimms' version, she had the order from her mother to stay strictly on the path. A mean wolf wants to eat the girl and the food in the basket. He secretly stalks her behind trees, bushes, shrubs, and patches of little and tall grass. He approaches Little Red Riding Hood and she naïvely tells him where she is going. He suggests that the girl pick some flowers; which she does. In the meantime; he goes to the grandmother's house and gains entry by pretending to be the girl. He swallows the grandmother whole (in some stories, he locks her in the closet) and waits for the girl, disguised as the grandma. When the girl arrives, she notices that her grandmother looks very strange. Little Red then says, "What a deep voice you have!" ("The better to greet you with"), "Goodness, what big eyes you have!" ("The better to see you with"), "And what big hands you have!" ("The better to hug/grab you with"), and lastly, "What a big mouth you have" ("The better to eat you with!"), at which point the wolf jumps out of bed, and swallows her up too. Then he falls asleep. In Charles Perrault's version of the story (the first version to be published), the tale ends here. However, in later versions the story continues generally as follows:

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets 2015-08-12

Harry Potter is a wizard. He is in his second year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Little does he know that this year will be just as eventful as the last ...The second in the Harry Potter series to be translated into Latin for the first time, this follows in the steps of other great children's classics. The huge task of translating into Latin (most translations are done from Latin) has been undertaken by Peter Needham, who taught Latin at Eton for over 30 years. James Morwood, of Oxford University, has said of the translation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone: 'The translation is great stuff. It is accurate and fluent, but it is much more than that. It has been carried off with wit, inventiveness, sensitivity and panache. I find it impossible to think of its being better done.'

Chamber of Secrets 2015-10-20

It all started with Harry Potter, the boy who lived. Harry was a wizard fresh from his first year at Hogwarts, a school of Witchcraft and Wizardry and had come home for the summer holidays. He feeling extremely depressed that his two best friends, Ronald Weasley, and Hermione Granger, hadn't written to him all summer, when a house-elf arrives in his bedroom at his uncle and aunt's house in Privet Drive. At that time, his uncle and aunt and cousin, Dudley, were busy entertain some guests. The hose-elf, named Dobby, had warned Harry about something bad that was going to happen at Hogwarts, so Harry must not go back to Hogwarts. Dobby also said that he had stopped Harry's letters from reaching him, thinking that Harry, on not receiving letters from his two best friends, might decide not to return to Hogwarts. This angered Harry and Dobby, getting scared, rushed into the front hall and made a cake (made by Aunt Petunia), fall on top of the guest's head with the help of a hover charm, and then fled from the scene. Harry's Uncle Vernon, got very angry with the magic he thought Harry had done and attached bars on his window, after which Ronald Weasley arrived on a flying car with his two older twin brothers, and rescued Harry from the Dursleys. Some more incredible incidents took place because of Dobby and Harry finally reached Hogwarts. After a few days of everyone reaching Hogwarts, frightening messages written in blood about a Chamber Of Secrets being opened was found on the its walls. Harry began to hear voices all over the place, voices which nobody could hear and stories began to go wild, when, Harry found a diary. Harry and Ron deduced that Voldemort was the culprit, only this time acting through Ron's only and younger sister, Ginny. Harry reached the place on time, saved Ron's sister, and, saved the world for the second time, from the return of the Dark Wizard, Voldemort.

Chamber of Secrets 2016-02-27

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. The second book in the JK Rowling series about a young, orphan wizard named Harry Potter begins shortly after his twelfth birthday at the end of July. Harry lives with his mother’s sister Petunia and her husband and son, Vernon and Dudley Dursely on a quiet street in Surrey. However, Harry is not as normal as the rest of his family, and from September until June he lives in a huge hidden castle somewhere in England called Hogwarts. Hundreds of other boys and girls live at Hogwarts too, where together they are all learning magic. Some of them are from wizarding families, whilst others grow up knowing nothing of the magical world and receive letters on their eleventh birthday telling them that those strange abilities they’ve always had are in fact impotent magical powers. It is Harry’s second year at Hogwarts and there he has two very close friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, a full blood wizard and muggle born respectively. After the shocks of Harry’s first year at Hogwarts, where he discovered that the man who murdered his parents is living, albeit a kind of half life, draining the life from others, and seeking a way to return himself back to his full health and power. This man’s name is Lord Voldermort. In the second book we begin to gain an insight into Voldermort, as Harry, without realising it, drifts into the memories of his nemesis through an enchanted diary. Harry is not the first person to possess Voldermorts memories however, in fact Ron’s younger sister Ginny, who is in her first year at Hogwarts, has been pouring her heart out into the pages of the diary for months and the diary, disguised as a caring ear to Ginny, has been using her life to become more and more powerful himself. As Voldermort’s power has grown he has used Ginny to unleash a deadly terror upon Hogwarts, an unknown killer that seems untraceable and leaves his victim’s paralyzed by fear. Harry meanwhile, begins to hear menacing voices, voices only he can hear and strange messages begin appearing across the school proclaiming that any student not a full-blood wizard will die and that the “Chamber of Secrets” has been re-opened. Together, Harry, Ron and Hermione begin to investigate, trying to discover what the Chamber of Secrets is, and what could possibly be attacking the students. Whilst in one of the memories locked in the diary Harry learns that his part giant teacher and friend, Rubius Hagrid, was expelled from Hogwarts as a child for keeping a dangerous animal on the grounds. To Ron’s horror the two boys discover that the monster was a giant, man-eating spider, but even worse that he is not the one who has been attacking the students. Eventually Hermione is found paralyzed on her way back from the library and a student is dragged into the Chamber of Secrets as one final sacrifice to the monster before Voldermort can finally be returned to full strength. Harry finds himself, separated from Ron and their brain-washed Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher who had accompanied him, in the caverns beneath the school and facing a huge, deadly snake, with nothing but his wand and a tattered old hat. This book is more of a mystery than its predecessor; with a real air of intrigue and uncertainty about it. Yet it finds itself in a slightly awkward position, somewhere between childhood innocence and naivety and darker teenage horror. In many places it seems a bit obvious and ham-fisted, Rowling seems to have opted for stereotypes rather than originality in these monsters and it makes it all a little contrived. Unfortunately this is inescapable and dulls the intrigue and interest of the book, in many ways this book came too soon, when the dark side of the magical world was still too undefined for readers for it to truly be explored to the extent that it needs to be for this story. Yet it is a necessary part of the series and must be read in order to understand the following five books. In many ways the Chamber of Secrets opens doors to aspects of the Harry Potter series that will become hugely important later on, ideas about Voldermort’s past and his soul and even his choice to hunt Harry begin to take shape and future relationships are hinted at. However, when it comes down to it The Chamber of Secrets is most definitely the weakest of all the Potter books, the story line is predictable and the newly introduced characters are pretty stereotypical and just add to the aforementioned predictability. The books best asset is the stuff with Lord Voldermort and Tom Riddle, the finale in the Chamber of Secrets is far better than the rest of the book; which seems to exist largely of ridiculous filler moments, like an incident with a cat hair and some polyjuice potion, rather than slowly gathering information throughout the story to build to a climax. It is a shame that more time isn’t devoted to Tom Riddle and the mysteries of Voldermort’s past, but that is rese

HARRY POTTER THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS 2016-02-27

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets begins when Harry is spending a miserable summer with his only remaining family, the Dursleys. During a dinner party hosted by his uncle and aunt, Harry is visited by Dobby, a house-elf. Dobby warns Harry not to return to Hogwarts, the magical school for wizards that Harry attended the previous year. Harry politely disregards the warning, and Dobby wreaks havoc in the kitchen, infuriating the Dursleys. The Dursleys angrily imprison Harry in his room for the rest of the summer. Luckily, Harry's friend Ron Weasley steals Harry away in a flying car, and Harry happily spends the rest of the summer at the Weasley home. While shopping for school supplies with the Weasleys, Harry has two unfortunate encounters. He first encounters Lockhart, one of his teachers, who demands to be in a photo shoot with Harry. Harry then encounters Lucius Malfoy, the evil father of one of Harry's enemies, who almost starts a fight with Mr. Weasley. As Harry prepares to return to Hogwarts, he finds that he and Ron are unable to enter the magically invisible train platform, so they fly the Weasley car to Hogwarts. They land messily, and both boys are given detentions. Lockhart, who believes Harry flew the car to get attention, lectures Harry. Quidditch practices begin and Draco Malfoy is the new Slytherin seeker. On the field, he calls Hermione a "mudblood," insulting her Muggle heritage. After taunting Hermione, Draco is the suspect when, on Halloween night, someone petrifies the school caretaker's cat and writes a threatening message. Before the cat is attacked, Harry twice hears an eerie voice. He hears it first during his detention and second during a party, moments before the cat is attacked. Everybody in the school is alarmed. By doing some research, Harry, Ron, and Hermione learn that fifty years ago a chamber at Hogwarts was opened and a student was killed. Playing for Gryffindor, Harry wins the Quidditch match against Slytherin. During the game, an enchanted ball hits Harry and causes him to lose the bones in his arm. Dobby, a house elf, has enchanted the ball in an effort to have Harry injured and sent home. That night, Harry sees the body of a first-year who has been petrified arrive at the hospital. Soon after, Lockhart begins a dueling club. During the first meeting, Harry terrifies his fellow students by speaking in Parseltongue to a snake. Heroic Harry Potter battles prejudice in the second volume of Rowling's wizard series. Retur The second Harry Potter book begins at the Dursleys – Harry’s Uncle Vernon, Aunt Petunia and Cousin Dudley. Harry, who is “home” for the summer holidays, desperately misses Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He misses the castle, and Hagrid, and Quidditch. But all his wizard stuff is locked in the cupboard under the stairs. The Dursleys, being non-magical Muggles, hate everything having to do with magic. Today is Harry’s 12th birthday. Not only have the Dursleys ignored it, they are focused on a dinner party to be given for a business prospect of Uncle Vernon's that night. Harry is expected to sit silently in his room during the party. Out in the garden, Harry thinks of his friends from Hogwarts - Ron and Hermione - who haven’t written to him all summer. He wants to send Hedwig with a letter, but mustn’t use magic outside Hogwarts. Just as Harry is remembering his narrow escape from Lord Voldemort last year at Hogwarts, he sees two enormous green eyes in the hedge!! They disappear just as Dudley waddles over to tease Harry about his birthday. Harry scares Dudley by pretending to cast a spell, but is punished by Aunt Petunia with a slew of chores in the hot sun while Dudley lazes about and eats ice cream. Finally Harry is given a pitiful meal of bread and cheese and sent upstairs just as the doorbell rings. Harry turns to collapse on his bed, only to find someone sitting on it!!!

harry potter the chamber of secret[Jk.Rowling] 2016-03-02

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is the second novel in the Harry Potter series, written by J. K. Rowling. The plot follows Harry's second year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, during which a series of messages on the walls of the school's corridors warn that the "Chamber of Secrets" has been opened and that the "heir of Slytherin" would kill all pupils who do not come from all-magical families. These threats are found after attacks which leave residents of the school "petrified" (frozen like stone). Throughout the year, Harry and his friends Ron Wesley and Hermione Granger investigate the attacks.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets 2016-06-18

This book proves how well someone can use their imagination. It is about a boy named Harry who is a wizard. He goes to a wizard school called Hogwalts, which is basically a castle with surrounding lakes and forest. Harry lives in a family of non-magic people who wizards call Muggles. His parents died when he was one, and he was left with his mother's sister. He was never liked by them. Harry was famous to wizards because he defeated the powers of another wizard when he was one. It was a bit of an accident, so he was still treated normally. Even this school has its ups and downs. Harry has enemies like Drako Malfoy and his least favourite teacher Snape. There were lots of stories told about the chamber of secrets and Harry and his friends, Ron particularly tried to solve the mystery. They had to find the entrance to the chamber, what was inside it, and who had been opening it and letting the monsters inside it out to attack the students. In the end, they found out that Ron's sister, Jinny was behind it but she had been under control by a diary. With this diary, you write in it and a person named Tom Riddle would write back. But Tom was an evil wizard so he managed to learn enough about Jinny to control her. Personally I enjoyed this story. People at any age would enjoy so long as they can understand the language used. The good thing about the story was the more they found out, the more it confused them

Just wow!! 2016-08-16

The second book in the JK Rowling series about a young, orphan wizard named Harry Potter begins shortly after his twelfth birthday at the end of July. Harry lives with his mother’s sister Petunia and her husband and son, Vernon and Dudley Dursely on a quiet street in Surrey. Harry meanwhile, begins to hear menacing voices, voices only he can hear and strange messages begin appearing across the school proclaiming that any student not a full-blood wizard will die and that the “Chamber of Secrets” has been re-opened. However the book does have its positive points, of course, as the characters develop and the mysterious and fascinating magical world is built upon, getting stronger with every word. Where in the first book everything is new the second book builds on the already established understanding and really sets up the rest of series.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets 2016-09-07

While the Dursley family—his uncle Vernon, aunt Petunia, and cousin Dudley—entertain a potential client for Vernon’s drill-manufacturing company Grunnings, Harry Potter reminisces upon the events of the previous year, including his enrollment in Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and confrontation with Lord Voldemort (the Dark wizard whose reign seemingly ended when he killed Harry’s parents and attempted but failed to kill Harry himself), and laments the fact that the best friends he made at the institution have not written to him, even for his birthday, on which the novel opens. Just as Harry is starting to anticipate his return to Hogwarts School, an impish house-elf named Dobby arrives out of nowhere to warn Harry against the decision to return to the wizarding world, citing grave danger as the reason and inciting Harry’s gravest punishment yet when he smashes a dessert crafted by Petunia for the dinner party and frames it on Harry himself. Ron Weasley arrives with his twin brothers Fred and George to perform a jailbreak in their father Arthur’s enchanted Ford Anglia and to deposit him at their family home the Burrow for the remainder of his holidays. Harry and the rest of the Weasleys—mother Molly, third eldest son Percy, and daughter Ginny—travel to Diagon Alley, where they are reunited with Hermione Granger and introduced to Lucius Malfoy, father of Harry’s school nemesis Draco, and Gilderoy Lockhart, a conceited autobiographer who has been appointed Defense Against the Dark Arts professor. As Harry and Ron plan to depart with the rest for Hogwarts School, the barrier within King’s Cross station that separates Muggles from wizards refuses to allow them passage, forcing them to fly Arthur’s car to the school, where they crash into a sentient willow tree on the grounds. The crash lands them in hot water with headmaster Albus Dumbledore and Minerva McGonagall, Head of Gryffindor House and the Transfiguration professor, who doesn’t expel them in spite of the clear breach of magical law but does assign them to detentions: Ron must clean the school trophies in the trophy room, and Harry must help the lunatic Professor Lockhart with addressing his fan mail. Lockhart’s classes turn out to be as obsessed with the man as he is with himself, as proven by a “hands-on” training experience with a pack of destructive pixies (small, bluish creatures that exist to cause mayhem), and Harry learns that prejudice exists in the wizarding world by the way of blood status: Those with “pure” blood (only wizarding heritage) have the advantage over and condescend to those with Muggle parentage. Harry also begins hearing an unnerving voice (one only he can hear) seemingly coming from the walls of the school itself, and during a “death-day party” for the Gryffindor ghost, the trio happens upon a petrified Mrs. Norris, the cat belonging to school caretaker Argus Filch, and a warning scrawled across one of the walls: “The chamber has been opened. Enemies of the heir, beware.” Rumours fly around the school regarding the history of the Chamber of Secrets, and for Harry and his friends, the answer comes by way of Cuthbert Binns, the ghostly professor of History of Magic: The Chamber of Secrets, which houses a terrible monster, was created by one of the school’s founders, Salazar Slytherin, after a fundamental disenfranchisement with the others (Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, and Rowena Ravenclaw), believing that students of non-magical parentage should be refused entry to the school. When a Bludger, one of the balls involved in Quidditch, chases after Harry instead of zigzagging toward any player it can hit, breaking his arm, Dobby returns in the middle of the night to visit Harry in the hospital wing, revealing that it was he who charmed the Bludger and sealed the gateway at King’s Cross and that the Chamber of Secrets had been opened before. Another attack occurs, this time to a first-year Gryffindor named Colin Creevey who idolizes Harry, and the school enters panic mode, setting up a dueling class for the students (led by Lockhart and Potions master/Head of Slytherin House Severus Snape), during which it is revealed that Harry can speak to snakes. This sparks the rumour mill yet again, as students around the school suspect Harry of being the Heir of Slytherin, and circumstantial evidence to support this theory arrives in the form of another attack, this time on Hufflepuff second-year Justin Finch Fletchley and the Gryffindor ghost. Harry, Ron, and Hermione begin to suspect that Draco is behind the attacks, given his family history of remaining well within Slytherin ranks and open hostility toward Muggle-born students, and so Hermione concocts Polyjuice potion, which allows them to become Draco’s boorish lackeys, Vincent Crabbe and Gregory Goyle, for an hour to interrogate him. This comes to nothing, as Draco’s father only told his son the general facts of the previous opening of the Chamber and that it

Why this Book Appeals to All 2017-05-22

A beautiful sequel to the first book, The Philosopher's Stone. As a potterhead ( the term for Potter fans ), I have read about each character and loved every one. I advise you to start with the first book, as many begin in between the series. This book is amazing. I love how JK Rowling's imagination takes you to the Wizarding World and allows you to experience and see the daily routines of wizards, witches and other magical creatures, making the book more realistic and humorous. In this particular book, the ways of the wizard's lives are stressed on, so that you understand how they live. You'll soon experience a wistful feeling, the desire to go to Hogwarts instead of your school. I certainly think this book will bring joy to the reader and will appeal to both children and adults. If your child is begging you to read it, try it out, because your child simply wants you to experience the wonderful world of the magical.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (English) 2017-07-11

Harry is in the summer holidays after his eventful yet exciting first year at Hogwarts school for Witchcraft and Wizardry. He is spending the first part of his summer with the Dursleys and they are expecting a visit from Vernon Dursley's boss so Harry is expected to 'be seen and not heard' 'to make no noise' and to 'shut that bloody owl up'. When Vernon's boss arrives everything goes smoothly, Harry is quiet and in his room… until Dobby the house elf appears. He warns Harry not to go back to Hogwarts, as well as that Dobby makes a lot of noise causing the dinner party downstairs to hear him. As Harry and Dobby venture downstairs, Dobby bewitches Petunia's prize pudding to fly and tells Harry if he decides to go to Hogwarts he will make the pudding fly into the Dursleys as Harry says he couldn't possibly not go to Hogwarts, Dobby makes the pudding fly and land on the unsuspecting dinner guests, then Dobby rather inconveniently for Harry, disapparates with a loud crack. Sign up for the Bookmarks email Read more A few hours later and a letter from the Ministry of Magic arrives giving Harry a warning because he, as an under age wizard, supposedly used magic outside of school. Harry finds himself locked in his bedroom. Late at night Harry receives an unexpected visit from a flying car flown by the Weasley twins, Fred and George, and in the back seat sits Ron. They help him escape from the Dursley's and Harry is overjoyed to find out he is going to spend the duration of the summer at the Weasley's house, the Burrow. Upon arriving Mrs Weasley is furious at the Weasley children for borrowing Mr Weasley's bewitched car but after a while they all settle in and prepare to go back to Hogwarts. When they arrive at King's Cross station Harry and Ron attempt to run into the wall but something prevents them, so, in order that they don't miss out on going to Hogwarts, Harry and Ron decide to take the bewitched car to Hogwarts. When they arrive Harry and Ron expect to be expelled as they land in the forbidden forest and are somewhat coldly greeted by a formidable Professor McGonagall. Thankfully they aren't expelled and they join their fellow Gryffindors as they all marvel at their more than spectacular entrance; the only one unimpressed is their best friend Hermione, who seems to be the only one apart from Professor McGonagall who could see that they could've died or worse: been expelled! As the year goes on they are greeted by a new Defence against the Dark Arts teacher. The new teacher is a well-known author in the wizarding world who Hermione idolises but Harry and Ron aren't so sure about him. As the year goes on mysterious instances keep occurring as students become petrified; this is, as Dumbledore expects, the result of the Chamber of Secrets opening again. Harry, Ron and Hermione are determined to get to the bottom of it but shockingly Hermione becomes petrified too! This is another great story by J.K. Rowling. It shows how Harry and Ron get on throughout the 'clever stuff' without Hermione and how the Chamber of Secrets was supposedly opened before by their biggest friend. It also shows a side of Hogwarts possibly without Dumbledore.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (English) by J. K. Rowling 2017-09-01

This book was really very amazing. the most part I like was theThis sparks the rumour mill yet again, as students around the school suspect Harry of being the Heir of Slytherin (as Slytherin was also a parselmouth), and circumstantial evidence to support this theory arrives in the form of another attack, this time on Hufflepuff second-year Justin Finch Fletchley and the Gryffindor ghost. This comes to nothing, as Draco’s father only told his son the general facts of the previous opening of the Chamber and that it occurred fifty years previously. Meanwhile, Myrtle Warren, an existentially mopey ghost that haunts a bathroom, unwittingly provides a new clue in the form of a diary deposited in her stall—a diary, moreover, that belonged to Tom Riddle, a student who knows all too well about the Chamber, having been witness to a fellow student’s death fifty years ago. The culprit, he reveals to Harry, was none other than Rubeus Hagrid, now gamekeeper for Hogwarts School; when Hermione is attacked next, alongside a Ravenclaw prefect, the school is put on lockdown, and Dumbledore and Hagrid are forced to leave the premises. Really this part was amazing. Thank You.

harry potter and the chamber of secrets 2017-09-04

1000 The second book in the JK Rowling series about a young, orphan wizard named Harry Potter begins shortly after his twelfth birthday at the end of July. It is a shame that more time isn’t devoted to Tom Riddle and the mysteries of Voldermort’s past, but that is reserved for later on in the series. W

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets 2017-09-07

harry potter spends the summer with The Dursleys without receiving letters from his Hogwarts friends. Harry is desperate to return to Hogwarts as soon as possible because the Dursleys have been treating him very badly ever since he got home from his first term. In his room, Harry meets Dobby, a house-elf, who warns Harry bad things will happen if he returns to Hogwarts, and reveals he intercepted his friends' letters. The Dursleys lock Harry up, but Ron, Fred and George Weasley rescue him in their father's flying car, a Ford Anglia. While purchasing school supplies, Harry and the Weasley family encounter Rubeus Hagrid and Hermione Granger, and they attend a book-signing by celebrity wizard Gilderoy Lockhart, who announces he will be the new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher. Harry also encounters Draco Malfoy and his father Lucius, who slips a book in Ginny Weasley's belongings. When Harry and Ron are blocked from entering Platform Nine and Three-Quarters (later revealed to be Dobby's doing), they fly to Hogwarts in Ron's father's car, crashing into the Whomping Willow upon arrival. Ron's wand is damaged, and the car ejects them out before driving off. Both boys narrowly avoid expulsion when Professor McGonagall gives them detention. While serving detention with Lockhart, Harry hears strange voices and later finds caretaker Argus Filch's cat, Mrs. Norris, petrified, along with a message written in blood announcing the "Chamber of Secrets has been opened, Enemies of the Heir, beware". McGonagall explains that one of Hogwarts' founders, Salazar Slytherin, supposedly constructed a secret Chamber and placed inside it a monster that only his Heir can control, to purge the school of impure-blooded wizards and witches. More attacks occur over the course of the year. Harry and Ron suspect Malfoy is the Heir, so Hermione suggests they question him while disguised using polyjuice potion. Their makeshift laboratory leads to a disused bathroom haunted by a ghost, Moaning Myrtle. When Harry communicates with a snake (something Salazar Slytherin could do), the school suspects him as the Heir. On Christmas Day, Harry and Ron learn that Malfoy is not the Heir, but he mentions that a girl died when the Chamber was last opened fifty years ago. Harry finds an enchanted diary, owned by a former student named Tom Marvolo Riddle, which shows him a flashback to fifty years before, where Riddle framed Hagrid, then a student, of opening the Chamber, and accused his giant pet spider, Aragog as its resident monster. When the diary disappears and Hermione is petrified, Harry and Ron question Hagrid. Professor Dumbledore, Cornelius Fudge, and Lucius Malfoy come to take Hagrid to Azkaban, but he discreetly tells the boys to "follow the spiders". Lucius has Dumbledore suspended. In the Forbidden Forest, Harry and Ron find a now aging Aragog who reveals Hagrid's innocence and that the dead girl was found in a bathroom, before giving a small clue of the Chamber's resident monster. Aragog then sets his colony of Acromantula on the boys, but the now-wild Ford Anglia saves them. A book page in Hermione's hand identifies the monster as a basilisk, a giant serpent that instantly kills those that make direct eye contact with it; the petrified victims only saw it indirectly. The school staff learn that Ginny was taken into the Chamber, and convince Lockhart to save her. Harry and Ron find Lockhart, exposed as a fraud, planning to flee; knowing Myrtle was the girl the Basilisk killed, they take him to her bathroom and find the Chamber's entrance. Once inside, Lockhart uses Ron's damaged wand against them, but it backfires, wiping his memory, and causes a cave-in. Harry enters the Chamber alone and finds Ginny unconscious, guarded by Tom Riddle. Riddle reveals that he used the diary to manipulate Ginny and reopen the Chamber. When Riddle creates the anagram for his future new identity, "I am Lord Voldemort" from his full name, Harry realises that Riddle himself is Slytherin's heir and Voldemort was only a pseudonym. After Harry expresses support for Dumbledore, Dumbledore's Fawkes flies in with the Sorting Hat, and Riddle summons the Basilisk. Fawkes blinds the Basilisk, and the Sorting Hat eventually produces a sword with which Harry battles and slays the Basilisk, but he is poisoned by its fangs. Harry defeats Riddle and revives Ginny by stabbing the diary with a basilisk fang. Fawkes's tears heal him, and he returns to Hogwarts with his friends and a baffled Lockhart. Dumbledore, reinstated as headmaster, praises them and orders for Hagrid's release. Dumbledore shows Harry that the sword he wielded was Godric Gryffindor's own sword, and says he is different from Voldemort, because he chose Gryffindor House instead of Slytherin House. Harry accuses Lucius, Dobby's master, of putting the diary in Ginny's cauldron and tricks him into freeing Dobby. The Basilisk's victims are healed, Hermione reunites with Harry and Ron, and

Harry expects it to be a normal year after his experiences the term before but a secret chamber opens, muggle-born students are attacked and Harry must put his life in danger once more. The three main characters in the story are Harry Potter – a young wizard who finds out he can speak Parselmouth (talk to snakes) and is mistaken for the heir of Slytherin; Ron Weasley – Harry’s best friend who steals his Father’s flying car to fly himself and Harry to Hogwarts; and Hermione Granger – Harry’s other best friend who is the smartest student in their year at school but who is petrified when the attacks start. The new Defence against the Dark Arts teacher is Gilderoy Lockhart who is a self-obsessed lunatic of a teacher. I enjoyed this book because it is packed with action, fantasy and creativity. My favourite part is when Harry is pulled into Riddle’s diary and is made to witness the expulsion of his friend Hagrid when he was at Hogwarts 50 years before. There are not many people who haven’t read this series but I would recommend this to anyone who loves fantastical stories and it is definitely worth 5 stars.I loved this book.........

A truly delightful book which transports us to the enchanted world and asks us not to leave. Penned by J.K. Rowling and was published by many publications and also in many languages.
