Nice Book 2017-04-12

Rick's books, man! They never cease to make me laugh! Some of the sentences are pure funny, while others are simply ridiculous you just have to laugh! The sarcasm is ever present! He really lays it on thick, but I was cracking up most of the time! So it worked :D Take some of these chapter titles: Theseus Slays the Mighty--Oh, Look! A Bunny Rabbit! Cyrene Punches a Lion (No Actual Lions Were Harmed in the Making of This Myth) Jason Finds a Rug That Really Ties the Kingdom Together The chapter titles are the best! My main criticism is that there were way too many modern references. A few of them would have been fine, but there were several per chapter. For example: One time, Hermes shows up in a UPS uniform in front of Perseus who asks him the meaning of the symbols on his shirts. Hermes looks down and asks what century it was, then switched back to normal Ancient Greek godly attire. Gods can't time travel! I mean, sure, it was really funny, but these kinds of jokes were used a lot. There were so many references to cellphones and the modern texting lingo such as "Hawt" and "LOL". It was clearly targeting a younger audience.

Percy Jackson and the Greek Gods 2017-07-12

Percy Jackson's Greek Gods is a hefty gift-size volume that profiles the 12 major Greek gods, as narrated by Percy Jackson from the bestselling series. It helps a little to read the Percy Jackson books first. Then readers will instantly connect with the narrator. They'll know why Percy prefers some gods over others and will get his sometimes sardonic, sometimes goofy sense of humor. Percy's wit helps smooth things over when the content gets more mature. Gods can behave very badly; they swallow their own children (who pop out eventually as fully formed gods), tear mortals and other gods apart (such as when Zeus gets his tendons ripped out), torture those who wrong them with outrageous eternal punishments (for starters, poor Prometheus is chained to a rock while an eagle pecks at his liver every day), get mortals to go crazy and kill their own families, . Besides providing a thorough study of the Greek myths, there are plenty of educational tidbits sprinkled throughout about word origins, why ancient Greeks and Romans wore laurel wreaths on their heads, and much more.
